Best Birding Places in Tacoma

When you think of birding, Tacoma ought to be the first location to pop into your mind. Not only are there many established trails through the forest, but there are also shoreline trails which open up an entire set of bird species you wouldn’t see in the woods. Being able to traverse trails with both the ocean and the forest is truly magical. Titlow Park

Waterfront views, wildflowers, and an easily accessible trail make Titlow Park one of our favorite places for bird watching in Tacoma. The trail is accessible to the public year-round so you’ll never miss a migration. There have been sightings of several different species of waterfowl, including heron, ducks, geese, and swans. You’ll also be able to spot birds among the trees in their natural habitat. You can find Titlow Park at 8425 6th Avenue in Tacoma.

Dash Point State Park

Located fairly close to Tacoma, Dash Point State Park is a wonderful place to go birding. It’s home to several different species of shorebirds and raptors. You can spend your day along the waterfront searching out some larger birds or head out on a morning hike to observe birds as they forage throughout the forest. You can find Dash Point State Park at 5700 Southwest Dash Point Road.

Fort Lewis

Fort Lewis is a gorgeous nature reserve located in Roy, Washington. This protected habitat is home to the Common Nighthawk, Streaked Horned Lark, Savannah Sparrow, House Wrens, and many others. There are several different types of wildlife environments located within Fort Lewis which allows you to see these special birds. There are wetlands, meadows, and forested areas all providing beautiful backgrounds for birding. You can find Fort Lewis at 8050 NCO Beach Rd JBLM-Lewis North in Roy, Washington.

Eagle Island State Park

This 10-acre park with breathtaking saltwater shoreline is home to a variety of bird species. You can relax at the beach and view the water birds or look for birds along the tree line. This is an amazing place that offers views of Mount Rainier as well. You can find Eagle Island State Park at 12125 Glenhaven Rd in Anderson Island.

Nisqually Reach

Located along the shoreline of Puget Sound, Nisqually Reach is home to a stop on the Pacific Flyway migration route. This offers a chance to view thousands of birds on any given day during the different seasons. The area contains virtually undeveloped shorelines, open water, bluffs, and vegetation. There have been sightings of alcids, grebes, loons, and ducks on the water. The inner island has lakes which provide sanctuary to herons, osprey, and eagles.
